What Is A Doula?

doula (/ˈduːlə/)
also known as a birth companion, birth coach or post-birth supporter, [1] is a non-medical person who stays with and assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, to provide emotional support and physical help if needed. They may also provide support to the mother's partner and family.
Unlike midwives who offer medical care, doulas specialize in emotional, informational, and physical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

A Doula's Role in Your Birth

Did you know that childbirth is not
just a medical or physical event?
The emotional well-being of the mother (and father) plays a crucial role in a smooth delivery. This is where a doula steps in, providing non-medical birth support that focuses on mental and emotional well-being.
Need emotional support?
The Role of Doulas in Empowering
Informed and Advocated Childbirth
The abundance of information passed down from previous generations, often based on subjective perceptions and beliefs about childbirth, coupled with the overwhelming amount of unsubstantiated information circulating on social media, can leave expectant parents feeling confused and overwhelmed.
Doulas play a crucial role in assisting parents in navigating the vast landscape of information surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, providing objective and personalized guidance.
Childbirth education classes and open discussions tailored to the specific priorities and needs of each parent are essential components of the informational support doulas offer.
Advocacy is another essential aspect of a doula's role, championing the rights of mothers and their unborn babies.
Doulas advocate for mothers to be:
-
Heard and prioritized, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being.
-
Empowered to listen to their bodies and take control of their childbirth experience.
-
Presented with a range of options and respected in their choices regarding their childbirth care.
Through advocacy and support during pregnancy and childbirth, doulas empower mothers to understand their priorities, assert themselves, and make informed decisions with confidence. They create a safe and supportive environment where mothers feel respected, heard, and in control of their childbirth experience.

Physical Support During Labor:
How Doulas Help
One of the roles of a doula in continuous labor support is to provide physical support, focusing on movement and the mother's physical comfort.
Doulas will ensure a conducive environment-people-relaxation to help the mother and father navigate labor and understand the active movements needed to optimize the baby's position.
